Sophia Haque, Pauline Phillips, Chucho Castillo, Conrad Bain & Eugene Patterson have passed away. May their souls rest in peace

 

Sophia Haque: June 14th 1971 – January 16th 2013
Sophia Haque, a former actress of the world's longest running soap opera, "Coronation Street", has passed away aged 41. Haque was also a dancer, singer and video jockey, having fronted the band Akasa in the 1980's and later working for MTV Asia and Star TV in Hong Kong. Other acting roles included parts in Bollywood movies such as "Khoobsurat" and "Mangal Pandey: The Rising" and appearances in theater productions in London's West End. Born in Portsmouth, UK, to British and Bangladeshi parents, Haque took dancing lessons from a young age and eventually attended the Arts Educational Schools of London. She is survived by her two sisters and her partner, musical director, David White.

Pauline Phillips: July 4th 1918 – January 16th 2013
The writer also known as Abigail Van Buren, Pauline Phillips, has passed away. She was 94. Phillips was a radio host and scribe, whose 1956 advice column, "Dear Abby", became the world's most widely-syndicated, with an estimated readership numbering in the tens of millions and ran for dozens of years. Following the success of her column, in the early 1960's she was given a daily radio program on CBS which offered advice to phone-in listeners. Phillips was born in Iowa's Sioux City and had three sisters, one of which was her twin. She too became a writer under the name of Ann Landers. Phillips is survived by her husband, a daughter, four grandchildren and two-great grandchildren.

Chucho Castillo: June 17th 1944 – January 15th 2013
Mexican boxer Chucho Castillo has passed away at the age of 68. Born in Nuevo Valle de Moreno, Castillo went on to make his professional debut in the ring against Carlos Navarrete in 1962, which he lost. His eventual record was 24 wins, almost half of which were by knockout, and 7 losses. 1970 saw Castillo become the WBA and WBC Bantamweight Champion, after losing his first attempt at a world title two years earlier. Castillo's rivalry with fellow Mexican pugilist Ruben Olivares is considered as one of the greatest rivalries in their country's sporting history. Castillo retired from boxing in 1975.

Conrad Bain: February 4th 1923 – January 14th 2013
Conrad Bain, the actor famed for his role as Phillip Drummond in the smash-hit sitcom, "Diff'rent Strokes", has passed away this week aged 89. Born in Lethbridge, Canada, he attended the Banff School of Fine Arts and later fought for his country during the Second World War. He was to become a US citizen in 1946 while studying as the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. This led to roles on Broadway and later work in television in the soap opera "Dark Shadows". Other parts included "Bananas" by Woody Allen, "Maude" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". Bain is survived by his daughter and three sons.

Eugene Patterson: October 15th 1923 – January 12th 2013
Civil rights activist and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Eugene Patterson, has passed away. He was 89. Born in Valdosta, Georgia, Patterson secured work with a local newspaper while still in his teens and later as editor of North Georgia College. After graduating from the University of Georgia, he served in the Second World War for which he was awarded both the Silver and Bronze Stars. After various newspaper roles, he became managing editor of The Washington Post in the late 1960's and later taught at Duke University before being appointed president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. 2010 saw him inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame. Patterson is survived by his daughter, three grandchildren and his sister.
