Dave Kocourek, Sivanthi Adityan, Allan Arbus, Robert Holding & Francois Jacob have passed away. May their souls rest in peace.





Dave Kocourek: August 20, 1937 – April 24, 2013

Former football player Dave Kocourek has passed away aged 75. Born in Chicago, Kocourek went on to attend the University of Wisconsin and later played in the Canadian Football League before spending the majority of the 1960s playing in the States. He was the winner of the AFL Championship with the San Diego Chargers and also spent time with the Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins. Kocourek was an AFL All-Star for four consecutive years and was the only player to compete in seven AFL Championship Games. He is a member of the AFL All-Time Team. Kocourek is survived by his wife, Mary Lee.


Sivanthi Adityan: September 24, 1936 – April 19, 2013

Indian Media tycoon and philanthropist, Sivanthi Adityan, has passed away at the age of 76. Born in Kayamozhi, Adityan learnt the publication trade through his father at the Dina Thanthi, eventually taking ownership of it in 1959 where it blossomed into India’s most-read newspaper. Adityan provided funds for the upkeep of a host of temples throughout the country and also funded many sporting projects, including the national volleyball stadium.  He was honored by the Indian Government for his contribution to literature and education with the Padma Shiri award in 2008. Other gongs include an Olympic Order of Merit and the International Olympic Committee’s Sports and Study award. He was also elected as the Life President of the Indian Olympic Association. Adityan was referred to as “Chinna Ayya” by his fellow countrymen as a mark of respect. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.    


Allan Arbus: February 15, 1918 – April 19, 2013

Television actor Allan Arbus has passed away at the age of 95. He is most well-known for playing the character of psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Freedman in the series “M*A*S*H.” He was born in New York and found a passion for acting when he starred in a high school play. In the 1940s he served in the United States Army where he also found a love of photography, starting an agency upon his departure from the military. Arbus moved to California in the late 1960s to pursue a career in acting, and secured some film parts that eventually led to his role in “M*A*S*H.” Later roles included the “Omen II” movie and turns in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Starsky & Hutch.” Arbus is survived by his wife and three daughters.


Robert Holding: November 29, 1926 – April 19, 2013

Renowned U.S. businessman Robert Holding has passed away at the age of 86. His wide ranging portfolio included ownership of the Sinclair Oil Corporation, the Grand America Hotel and the ski resorts Sun Valley and Snowbasin. Holding was born in Utah and attended university there. He founded his first Little America in Wyoming in 1952. By the time of his death, “Forbes” ranked him as the 155th wealthiest person in the U.S.A., estimating his net earnings to be in the region of $2.6 billion. Holding suffered a stroke just over a decade ago, and though semi-paralyzed, continued to manage his firms until his death. He is survived by his wife and three children.


Francois Jacob: June 17, 1920 – April 20, 2013

Revered biologist Francois Jacob has passed away at the age of92. In 1965, he was the joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Born in Nancy, France, he mastered reading at an early age and showed great promise in the fields of maths and physics before deciding to enter medical school. Jacob left his homeland during the Nazi occupation, migrating to the U.K. to help with the war effort. He returned to France towards the end of the conflict, suffering injuries during a German air bombardment and was awarded the Cross of Liberation, his nation’s highest honor. He received further awards for science, including the Gran Prix Charles-Leopold and a Lewis Thomas Prize. Jacob is survived by his second wife, three sons and a daughter.
