Hjalmar Johan Anderson, David Leggett, Gury Marchuk, Derek Watkins & Deke Richards have passed away. May their souls rest in peace.

Hjalmar Johan Anderson: March 12, 1923 – March 27, 2013

Olympic Gold Medallist speed skater, Hjalmar Johnan Anderson, passed away this week at the age of 90. Born in Rodoy, Norway, Anderson went on the take three golds at the 1952 Winter Olympics in his home nation, becoming the most successful participant at that year’s event. Anderson was also the World and European All Round Champion skater in the early 1950s, setting three world records in three years. Such was his popularity that four statues were erected of him around Norway while he was still alive. Anderson is survived by three children and a grandson, also a speed-skater.   


David Leggett: September 18, 1933 – March 26, 2013

David Leggett, a former National Football League quarterback, has passed away this week. He was 79. Leggett was born in Ohio where he graduated from the state’s university with a degree in business, playing for a short time for the NFL’s Chicago Cardinals before his draft into the US Air Force. With his military service complete, he played in the Canadian League, before re-joining the USAF. Leggett will be most fondly remembered for leading his Ohio team to an undefeated season in 1954, securing the Rose Bowl and the Most Valuable Player Award. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. 


Gury Marchuk: June 8, 1925 – March 24, 2013

Eminent Russian scientist, Gury Marchuk has passed away aged 87. Born in Orenburg Oblast, Marchuk became a member of the Communist Part in 1947. In 1979, he was elected deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Noted for his Indo-Russian scientific collaboration, he was made an honorary member of the National Academy of Sciences of India and in 2002 was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government. His many national awards included the Lomonosov Gold Medal, Demidov Prize and the USSR State Prize.


Derek Watkins: March 2, 1945 – March 22, 2013

British musician Derek Watkins has passed away this week. He was 68. Born in Reading, UK, he began to learn the cornet at the age of 4 and 13 years later turned professional. He recorded with the likes of the London Symphony Orchestra, Placido Domingo, The Beatles and Frank Sinatra. Watkins also played on film scores for many movies including “Superman II,” “Gladiator,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Basic Instinct.” He will be most remembered for playing trumpet on every James Bond soundtrack from “Dr. No” through to “Skyfall.” He was also the visiting professor for trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Watkins is survived by his wife and their three children.


Deke Richards: April 8, 1944 – March 24, 2013

Songwriter and producer, Deke Richards has passed away at the age of 68. Born in Los Angeles, he went on to play in Debbie Dean’s backing band (for whom he penned a song) and in 1966 was signed as a songwriter and record producer in Motown. He would produce many of the Jackson 5s early singles including “ABC,” “The Love You Save” and “I Want You Back.” Other big names that Richards worked with were Martha and the Vandellas and Diana Ross and the Supremes – co-writing their US number one, “Love Child,” as well as writing Diana Ross’s UK number one hit, “I’m Still Waiting.” He is survived by his wife, brother and two nephews.
