Obituaries 30th August- 6th of September 2012

Michael Clarke Duncan, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, Art Modell, Tom Green, Charlie Rose have passed away. May their souls rest in peace.

Gentle giant Michael Clarke Duncan passed away this week following complications from a recent heart attack at the age of 54. The Oscar-nominated actor was most well-known for his turn playing wrongly imprisoned death-row inmate John Coffey in the movie The Green Mile. Born on December 10th 1957 in Chicago, Duncan eventually dropped out of University and took to manual labor to support his family. He later moved to Los Angeles where he would work in security while pursuing his dream of acting. His big break came with a role in Armageddon in 1998. Duncan is survived by his sister, mother and fiancée. 

 


Controversial Vatican Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini passedaway this week aged 85. An outspoken member of the Catholic Church, Martini thought it necessary that the religion modernize and reform, famously stating that it was 200 years behind the times. His views would cause great division within the faith. Born February 15th 1927 near Turin, Italy, Martini went on to join the Jesuits when he was 17, being ordained as a priest in 1952. He was then to spend the majority of his life in Rome, with his final years in Jerusalem and then Milan where he died. 

 


Football and media mogul Art Modellhas passed away this week at the age of 87. From a high-school dropout, he went on to become a millionaire many times over, being a driving force behind the birth of televised broadcasting of the NFL, then later controversially moving the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. Modell sold his share in the franchise after 43 highly successful years. He was born on June 23rd 1925 in Brooklyn and after leaving school early went through various menial jobs before joining the military then attending television school in 1948. Six years later he joined advertising company L.H. Hartman and made his first fortune. Modell is survived by two sons and six grandchildren. 

 


Renowned abstract artist Tom Green has passed away at the age of 70. Famed for painting large, experimental and highly colourful works, Green has been shown at New York's Corcoran, the Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He was born on May 27th 1942 in Newark and graduated from college in Washington, before heading to Maryland University where he would earn a master's degree in painting. He is survived by his second wife, a step daughter and two sisters. 


Charlie Rose, a former US representative and North Carolina Democrat passed away this week, aged 73. As well as serving 12 terms in Congress, Rose was also a great supporter of tobacco interests, an ardent champion of Tibetan independence and former president of the North Atlantic Assembly. Rose wielded so much influence that his nickname was "Mayor of the Capitol." He was born on August 10th 1939 and went on to graduate in law from the University of North Carolina. He would practice law until 1972 when won election to the US House. Rose is survived by his wife, four children, a sister and brother.
